And the Winner is... TRUE EXPERIENCE!
True Experience has been supporting people living with mental illness since 1982 in Dunnville. The past two years have seen enormous growth in the programs offered, primarily due to significant community outreach and engagement.
Using a holistic, three-pronged approach to helping people who live with mental illness, True Experience offers supportive housing, community work programs and social recreation, aiming to address the key areas of daily living.
True Experience recognizes the need for community mental health and wellness supports, and, as such, has made it a priority, introducing a number of initiatives designed to help end the stigma associated with mental illness and ensure people in crisis know there is hope and help in their community.
These initiatives include:
“Ride Don’t Hide”
A Canada-wide cycling event to raise awareness about mental illness and reduce its stigma. True Experience has hosted rides in 2016 & 2017.
World Suicide Prevention Day
This annual global event was hosted locally by True Experience for the first time in 2017. True Experience with the support of community volunteers is bringing this to Haldimand for the first time. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of many community volunteers, it included a walk, BBQ and a candle-lighting service to show support for people who have been impacted by suicide as well as those who have suicidal ideations. White Board Campaign
True Experience embarked on this campaign - shared on social media – in support of World Suicide Prevention Day as a means to let individuals know they are not alone and that there are people and supports available in the community if only they reach out for help.
True Experience also partners with – and extensively supports – other community groups and stakeholders in Dunnville, lending a hand wherever it is needed. The organization is a genuine community leader, especially in the fight to understand and eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
